Legendary Guyanan leader Eusi Kwayana joins fast for the safe return of Haitian human rights activist Lovinsky

Eusi Kwayana, legendary leader in the struggle for independence and democracy in Guyana, joined the 24-hour fast initiated by Global Women's Strike to demand safe return of Haiti human rights activist Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine. Here is his statement:

"Something very urgent in the disappearance of Lovinksky Pierre-Antoine impels me to join this fast for the appointed 24 hours and to affix my signature to the hundreds and hundreds who have signed and will sign this most momentous petition. For what purpose or with what objective can forces with the power to do so hold young Lovionksy in restraint dare to lay their hands on this exemplary young citizen of this remarkable country whose contribution to the right to freedom is second to none?Lovinksky's unexplained detention is an extraordinary violation of his own human rights and those of his family. Beyond that, it seems made to order as a provocation to all those who love and respect him and his role in society and its renewal. Finally, let it be known that Lovinsky's enforced absence does not come from friends of Haiti who welcome its uphill efforts, for the first time, to democratic self government and self management. HANDS OFF CITIZEN LOVINKSY PIERRE-ANTOINE. HANDS OFF HAITI. RELEASE HIM NOW BEFORE THE LINE IS CROSSED! RELEASE HIM NOW AND IN GOOD HEALTH!"  Eusi Kwayana

The fast, on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007 in Los Angeles, gathered at 10:30am outside the Brazilian Consulate at 8484 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills

Who is Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine?

Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine was kidnapped in Haiti and has been “disappeared” since August 12th.  There is an international call for actions pressing for his safe return.  In Southern California, we are making an urgent call for people who will join Danny Glover & others to participate in a rolling fast asking for his safe return to his family and community who love and need him. Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine is an extraordinary grassroots organizer and a leading advocate for the poor, including street children, teenage mothers and victims of torture.

What is a rolling fast?

A rolling fast allows people to commit to fast for a number of hours during a 24 hour period.  You can participate by either fasting for the entire time or commit to a certain number of hours. The idea is that fasters will overlap in order to cover the 24 hour period, starting at 10:30 am November 13th.

What if I want to fast but can’t get to the fast site?

Fill out the information below and email or fax it – if you choose, your name can be included in the “bring Lovinsky home” fasters list which will be read at the press event and speakout outside the Brazilian Consulate.  All fasters on or off site are asked to wear a red ribbon to indicate you are fasting for Lovinsky’s safe return.  Please let others know why you’re wearing it.

What if I can’t fast, what can I do?

Come out to the Consulate -- support the call for Lovinsky’s release and support the fasters.  Wear a red ribbon on fast day and sign the petition.

How do I sign up to take part in the rolling fast?

Fill out the information below on your commitment to fast and email or fax it in.  If you can come to initiate the fast outside the Consulate at 10:30 please let us know and also how long you will be able to stay.

Why hold the fast outside the Brazilian Consulate?

The Brazilian government heads the UN forces who have had the responsibility for law and order in Haiti since President Aristide was forced to leave Haiti in 2004. The US and Canada are also key figures.  Together we are urging them to do all in their power, including making resources available to ensure Lovinsky’s immediate and safe release.

Whether or not you can participate in the fast please sign the online petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/august/petition.html.  Also please share the petition information with as many people as you can.
